Excel - Getting Started with Tables
Tables are a great feature in Excel. To convert a range to a table, just use CTRL + T. You will be asked if your range has a header row, which it definitely should. Click Yes. Now you have a new tab - a contextual tab - called Table Design. I always create a Table before making a PivotTable. Why? If data is added to my table, I can simply refresh the table and the PivotTable updates. With a range, you have to change your data source. You may forget to change it, and your PivotTable is now wrong.
