Explaining Design Research to your clients

What is Design Research and how do you explain its value to clients? You need to be able to answer these questions in order to get the resources to do proper design research. I like to keep my explanation of design research short and simple by focussing on the most important characteristic. Design research is about exploration. It's about finding clues, creating choices and figuring out if the challenge you're working on is worth solving. It's NOT about validating ideas, finding the best answer or coming to conclusions. The best way to illustrate this difference is through a real life story.
