Taking advantage of the steady waters of Monocacy Creek, a tributary of the Lehigh River, the Moravians built a carefully planned community. By the mid-1700s, a small but impressive industrial district had developed along the creek, powered entirely by water. Mills and workshops produced goods needed for a self-sustaining town.
