An example on how to compute external-toothed gear ratios. It explains: the direction of rotation of external-toothed gears; simple gear ratios for two gears in mesh, three gears in mesh; and compound gear ratios (four gears in mesh). The trainer was designed with a stepped pin that allows the larger gear to mesh with the cluster gear to form a compound gear ratio.
