E/Z designations for alkenes

if the two doubl-bonded carbons in an alkene don't have a group in common, you can't designate them as cis/trans. But you can use Z/E. In the diastereomer designated (Z) the higher priority groups on each sp2 carbon are pointing in the same direction relative to the double bond. For (E), the opposite is true.
