When you suck at shiftboosting so much that you make the track do it for you instead. I cut out a bunch of notches on the road at regular intervals which gives you a shiftboost when you run over them. It's too bad this game has a speed cap that causes your machine to lose all it's speed when you go above ~10300km/h otherwise I would've put automatic shiftboosters everywhere.
This track was made in a very early version of Manifold that didn't yet support road textures or jump plates or pipes/cylinders or any of that so the track might look a bit bland.
