The ruins of the former Campbell stronghold of Finlarig Castle stand on a peninsula between the River Lochay and Loch Tay. Despite being such a beautiful ruin, it has a dark history.
The most notorious story associated with this castle is the stone lined rectangular pit located on the north side of the castle. It’s said that this was a beheading pit- where convicted commoners would kneel down and promptly have their heads chopped off by the executioners axe.
There is a tree on the north side of the castle called the Hanging Tree, where commoners were executed.
The Black Duncan is buried at Finlarig, in the old and crumbling mausoleum.
