First Act Problems | Gladiator 1 vs 2

Do you ever get to the end of a project and realize it's not having the emotional impact you hoped? Maybe you have a good 3-act structure, a strong character arc, big stakes, everything the "screenplay guides" suggest, but still, you simply can't figure out the problem. Well, the problem likely resides earlier in your script, in the first act, or even the opening pages. Writer's block is most nefarious in the beginning, after all, because we subconsciously know how important introductions are. Many of us end up rewriting the first few scenes over and over. Although that can induce a little storytelling madness, there's a good reason to fixate on the opening. A good first act works as a solid foundation for the rest of your story.
