First-order PDE
Here is a standard trick for solving first-order partial differential equations. We solve a variable-coefficient first-order linear PDE using the slope method or the method of characteristics. This involves noticing that a directional derivative of our solution is zero, and therefore our solution is constant on characteristic curves. To determine those curves we need to solve a differential equation.
