Fit & Finish Drill
Fit & Finish Drill Hopefully you can all see the screen. Okay the first drill, now, is gonna be “Fit and Finish.” Okay, now Fit and Finish: We’re gonna start, we’re gonna get ‘em in the perfect position that they would be in. Now you want your offensive line in the end. After the ball’s snappy, you’ve got your second foot on the ground. Now you see, some of these guys they’re movin’. They’re dead-legged. Now, when I went to Houston, if there wasn’t a thirty-second team, some of these guys would still be plumbers and concrete workers and things like that, so. We had to develop guys there, too. We started with six rookies on offense with the opening ball game. Some of these guys were on the street. So, you’ve gotta get back to it. Now notice this is a post-snap drill, so our feet are movin’. We’re gonna get ‘em into position, here, where their head is inside. The defender now is gonna do a good job and it’s always hard to get a good look in practice. You gotta teach your guys how to practice. And I’m findin’ out more and more every day that gettin’ a good look is hard to come by, and I understand that. So, what we’re doin’ in this drill here is we’re trying to get into position while keeping our base, keeping our feet moving, raising up when we get the guy going, and finish with this momentum. As this guy starts to go this way, maybe the ball carrier’s running over here. So, as this guy starts to go to the ball, then we’re gonna be left-hand strong and pushing by the ball. And we’re not gonna try to turn him and wrench him, and wrench our backs. Now, you’re gonna see some here, that are gonna be some are good, some are not real good. This guy’s pretty flat right here. You see him, he’s trying to start to come up, before you got him going. What I like is, I like the base, get their arches in the ground. Some of ‘em have a hard time getting the idea. There’s a rookie over here, Chester Pitts. And what I used to do is have the video people video my drills. And they wouldn’t tell the players in individual. Now, you look how tired the guy is right here. He’s kinda straight-legged. Top of the second-round pick, and they’re being a very very productive player, and we’ve gotta develop ‘em. They don’t know it; you’ve gotta assume that they don’t know anything. Get their feet going, get pushed, don’t try to wrench ‘em. Don’t force the issue, finish on your feet, finish on the rides. Some are good, some are not as good. All right. Let’s see what it looks like, see if we can find one here in the game. We’re gonna run the inside zone here to the left, and your drill’s gotta show up here on the tape. There’s gonna be bad plays, there’s gonna be guys that miss, but we’re gonna look at the left guard right here. And the Fit and Finish drill is this right here: stay on your feet, keep your feet movin’ and finish. We gotta see some evidence of your drills on the tape. Here’s a guy that’s over the top of his feet, and that’s not a good play. So, we gotta have sticking points; everyone’s got the same kind of problems. But you gotta see the finish, right here, finish: it’s gotta show up on the tape. The idea is to get as many people finishing plays on their feet, pushing defenses, and the ball moving up the field. Now, you gotta underfront right here, bringing the backers, so that you can’t run--combination blocking. This left guard—this is a different left guard, here. Finishing out a linebacker. But daily, we’ve gotta make sure that you’re reinforcing your drills of what you see on the tape. Does it show up on the tape: all right, you got a thirty-front. They’re making you man-block. This guy’s not finishing on his feet, okay, there’s a rookie. Left guard is finishing on his feet. Same left tackle now, that just fell on his face. We gotta improve. They were supposed to scoop right here, they were supposed to scoop to this linebacker. They changed on us. Running his own plan to the left, bringing a backer on the edge, pinching the front. Finish the play! Finish on your feet. Let’s see evidence of finishing on your feet. The more guys there are on the ground, the less chance we got to moving the football. Finish. We gotta show up. We get one more, and then we gotta move it along here. Yea, I’m having the same problem now, with maintaining contact. The guy’s not keeping the head up. visit http://www.glazierclinics.com/ for more information
