Five Senses Talking "Atomic" Digital Watch
In this episode of The Good Timekeeping Show I'll review a relatively inexpensive digital watch with a couple of nice, useful and fun features. First of all, it's a talking watch. A synthesized voice will announce the time whenever you tap the "2 o'clock button". This watch also has a daily alarm and an electroluminescent backlight (which is actually not very bright). The default display on this watch shows the day of the week, the time in hours and minutes and the month-and-date in the bottom row. The watch will show seconds after you press the 2 o'clock button but then it will soon go back to showing the day of the week instead of seconds. The other, major feature of this watch is that it has a built-in radio receiver tuned to WWVB in the United States. At 3:00 every morning this watch will activate its receiver and attempt to update the time and date automatically. If reception is unsuccessful the user can manually start time reception at any time. You can also set the time manually to something other than "Atomic" time until the watch is able to update itself. I did not demonstrate the manual setting procedure in this video because, let's face it, I great WWVB reception where I live. The watch in this video is primarily intended for people who have vision problems and find the talking feature to be essential. To me, however, the talking feature is more of a really neat novelty. But I suspect that as you search around the Internet for specialty items for the visually impaired you wiill find this exact watch or similar models with only slight variations. I found this on Amazon under the brane name "Five Senses" but you may find it with another brand name. I suspect those other variations will have essentially the same functions. The watch featured in this video is said to be water resistant but the instructions don't say anything else about it. So I would suspect it's okay to use the watch while you're washing your hands or for other, typical uses when it might get a little wet, but I wouldn't trust it for swimming. The voice isn't very loud but also isn't too quiet. I think the makers of this watch have struck a comfortable balance. It's not too loud but not too quiet.
