A short video explaining how I view the physics of a fly cast.
I consider the loop to be a transverse wave transmitting from the rod tip to the fly, in the same way that aerial mends and tailing loops do.
Thinking of the cast in this manner has allowed me to develop more control over the cast with less effort. Adjusting the speed of all the waves running through the line using subtle movements of the rod tip to control tension has dramatically improved my casting over the last 3 years. I now need much less effort before forming the loop to get better results than before.
It has also improved my ability to teach casting to my students.
