Numerical derivatives of functions are calculated using forward finite difference, central finite difference and backward finite difference using Fortran function subprograms. A math Olympiad function is used to illustrate the calculation for the numerical derivatives. Numerical differentiation is important in optimization, function minimization or maximization, computational mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, and computational science where solving differential equations may be needed.
