Four Common Uses for Feathers - Feather Function #1

There are hundreds of ways that birds use feathers, some more common than others. Here's four. It varies between birds, but there's a few functions that are SO useful that most birds use them. #1 - Insulation 100% of birds use feathers for insulation. Feathers are light and great at trapping pockets of air which keep the bird warm. #2 - Flight This is not universal. There are some species of birds that get by without the ability to fly. About 60 species of birds cannot fly. But the other 9,900 species CAN fly. So 99.4% of bird species can fly. #3 - Camouflage As birds basically 3D-print feathers from their skin, they can include structures and pigments that affect color. Genetic programs turn pigment cells on and off during printing, which can make patterns. And patterns are great for hiding, assuming they match the surroundings. I couldn't find the exact number of species, but LOTS of birds do this. #4 - Display The opposite of camouflage is to produce bright feathers that draw attention. Birds do this to keep their flock together (like parrots) or to attract others from their species (like peacocks). But there has to be SOME positive effect, or it doesn't make sense.
