Fracture toughness is different for every material, but classes of materials tend to exist within similar ranges. Metals and many composites have a high fracture toughness. Ceramic materials or materials like graphite and diamond, have smaller fracture toughness. The reason is the difference in their bonds. Who would have guessed?
