Freak Audio Lab - Need Some Coffee

Need Some Coffee sounds like a straightforward song. It’s not. Every “coffee break” (when the pot pours coffee in the video) grows from 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 to 2/4, which makes the riff land where you don’t quite expect it. The absurdity of placing the incredibly cute North African fennec fox with its huge radiator-like ears in a sort of benign Falling Down scenario where coffee is the only solution in stressful situations gave me a ton of energy to put together heaps of wacky scenes. (Something that doesn’t happen by itself and is very time-consuming). Just like with the video for the song Defrag, I’ve worked with sketches, photographs, and storyboards. AI then creates the animations based on my instructions, images and templates. Then I edit everything and work in DaVinci Resolve. I call this process IAAI. When it comes to the ethical side - not the creative side, but all the awful exploitation that some AI companies are involved in - I’ve learned a ton just recently thanks to my community enlightening me. I’m really grateful for that. I’ve cancelled my subscription to one shady service and switched to another one that’s trained only on properly licensed material and that actually pays creators for their data. I read something on X in the rather heated debate about the use of AI in one’s creative work. Don’t remember who wrote it, but it went something like this: the point is to merge your imagination and artistic vision with AI’s precision and logic. AI will never surpass human creativity or the artistic process. Calling it “horseshit” misses the point. It doesn’t steal from you, it amplifies you. It’s not plagiarism; it’s collaboration. I’m torn, because when it comes to the visual side, I find being able to animate my images and quirky ideas incredibly stimulating. When it comes to using AI in music, I find it completely alien and it will never ever happen. Simply because I find it uninteresting. Everything is in its infancy with this new technology, and it’s hard to say what’s right or wrong. I’ve basically always done things “wrong” and never what was expected of me in my, for lack of a better word, career. When I released my first solo album, everyone expected a proper guitar manifesto. Instead, it became a synth record, dripping with sequencers, completely without guitar and with silly lyrics. Dead stop. After Freak Kitchen’s heavy Spanking Hour achieved success both in Japan and elsewhere, we took an unexpected left turn and made a semi-acoustic pop album. Dead stop. The future will crystallize what is right or wrong. Hope you can still enjoy the video, even though AI has a digital finger in the pie. Thanks for reading. My creative process is 100 % hands-on from start to finish: I often begin with hand-drawn sketches, a storyboard, refine details in Photoshop, direct the motion using AI as an animation tool, and then add sound, edit, composite, color-grade, and add effects in DaVinci Resolve Studio. The entire pipeline is guided by my, sometimes weird, vision, frame by frame. I simply call these hybrid projects IAAI - a personal signature for strange stuff that blends traditional craft with new, cutting-edge technology.
