Friendly Fire
Friendly Fire This one’s been hanging around for a while. I had most of the words, and kinda knew how I wanted it to go, but didn’t quite know how to get it all together…think I got there in the end. It was the transition that was tough…the verses felt alright, chorus seemed ok, but getting from the one to the other just took a bit…. When I think of phrases that become the seeds of new songs, I like it when a phrase can be used in different ways to mean different things. I had always thought the phrase “friendly fire” was such a weird one…but then thinking of twisting it a little bit, looking at it from different sides, chuck a couple metaphors at it and see what sticks…that could be something. I also decided that in addition to three different verses, I wanted the choruses to all have different words. It’s how I could bend the idea of “friendly fire” the way I wanted to. Made it a real pain to try to memorize though, cause every line from each of the chorus parts kept popping up in my head when it wasn’t supposed to…and it didn’t help that I shuffled them around a few times, realizing a line fit better in another spot after I wrote it. At least I write in pencil…”cut and paste” is a little more laborious, but it still works…
