Wait… Marc’s Converting a Garage? Is He Moving Again?! Take a breath, my friends. I know we’ve developed a reputation for moving every five years, but this time it’s actually the opposite. Instead of packing up and heading somewhere new, we’re making changes that help us plant our roots a little deeper. One of my goals for 2026 is to teach a beginner’s woodworking course for the Guild. To do that well, I want to work in a space that mirrors what many of you actually have: a standard American garage. This isn’t about building a dream, magazine-worthy woodshop. It’s about showing how tools can realistically coexist with everyday family storage and activities. For us, the garage is where we repair bikes, run a Glowforge laser, pot plants, and store all the normal life stuff. The problem? Missouri weather. In the winter, it’s a frozen tundra. In the summer, it’s Satan’s armpit. That makes an otherwise functional space miserable for most of the year. So we decided to invest in finishing it properly: insulation, drywall, and a mini-split HVAC system to make it usable year-round. And since creators are often a little cagey about what projects like this actually cost, I want to be completely transparent. No freebies, no questionable math, and no "We're going to do this ourselves......with the help of this other guy that just happens to know how to install mini-spits!" At this point in my life and career, I have exactly zero desire (or time) to tackle this kind of renovation myself. Everything was handled by local businesses, and here’s what it cost. Insulation & Drywall Blow in R-19 fiberglass insulation in the garage attic Install R-13 kraft batt insulation in the walls with 1/2” drywall Tear out bad ceiling seams and re-tape Three-coat tape and sand all drywall Total Cost: $4,955 In the video, Nicole says "$3,200!" and you can see my immediate reaction. She clearly misremembered. Mini-Split Installation Mitsubishi MUZ-FX18 (Outdoor Unit) Mitsubishi MSZ-FX18 (Indoor Unit) Insulated refrigerant lines Pad/legs for heat pump Condensate drain Electrical: new disconnect tied into existing high-voltage circuit Total Cost: $8,900 A few things to keep in mind about pricing: Costs vary wildly depending on where you live. Even within our area, we received a wide range of bids for the exact same scope of work. In Denver, a similar mini-split installation cost me $12k.  You can absolutely save money by doing portions of the work yourself. The only things I plan to DIY are insulating the garage door and painting the finished space. You might also notice the mini-split install references an existing high-voltage circuit. The previous owners had a hot tub in the backyard. We’re not big fans of swimming in “people soup,” so the hot tub had to go, but the circuit stayed. That made it relatively simple (and less expensive) to power the new unit. If your installer needs to run a brand-new circuit, expect the price to climb. Was It Worth It? All in, this was a significant investment. But if you plan to spend serious time in your garage,  woodworking or otherwise, making the space comfortable year-round is, in my opinion, absolutely worth it. I hope sharing the real numbers helps you plan your own projects with a little more clarity and less guesswork.
