Garter Tab Cast On

This three-stitch cast on is often used to start knitting shawls worked from the top down. It creates a nearly invisible start that melds seamlessly into a garter stitch border. The version shown here uses a long-tail cast on for the tab, to make it easier for new knitters. More experienced knitters will want to use a provisional cast-on for those initial three stitches, then pick up the free loops of the provisional cast-on when you pick up stitches to begin the shawl.
