Algebra Essentials, Lesson 10, Solve Proportion Problems Get the book at bit.ly/AEGEDBook A strong foundation in the symbolic "language" of algebra along with the concepts of simplifying and solving are very important to the GED® Math Test and for college. Algebra Essentials provides that foundation for struggling students by focusing deeply on algebraic reasoning. In this, the tenth lesson from Algebra Essentials, we'll learn to solve a new type of equation, proportion problems, equivalent fractions with a missing value. First, we'll examine some simple equivalent fractions and notice the pattern that, if two fractions are equivalent, so are their cross products. Then we'll use that fact to solve simple examples in the beginning level practice. For experienced students, we'll extend our understanding by throwing in negatives, fractions, decimals, and word problems. We'll even see a method to use proportions to solve percent problems. Advanced students will get some college prep as we look at scaling using proportions, more complex word problems, and proportions that result in multi-step equations. 3:59 Bgn Ex 1 x/32=7/4 7:08 Bgn Ex 2 11/f=1/3 9:15 Exp Ex 3 3/16=n/-12 11:13 Exp Ex 4 Complex fractions 14:05 Exp Ex 5 10/12 = (4-z)/30 18:12 Exp Ex 6a What is 15% of 72? 21:58 Exp Ex 6b 42 is 17% of what number? 24:23 Exp Ex 6c 14 is what percent of 11? 27:13 Exp Ex 7 Fitz can swim 4 laps in 20 min.
