Generating Equivalent Fractions: Multiplication
Generate Equivalent Fractions: Multiplication Fractions describe part-to-whole relationships. Often we understand fractions as ratios, or a comparison between two numbers: the part and the whole. Fractions can be written in a variety of ways that maintain the same ratio or part-to-whole comparison. In this video, we describe how to use multiplication to generate equivalent, or equal fractions. For example, eating ½ of a pizza is the same as eating 2/4 of a pizza, which is the same as eating 4/8 of a pizza. 4/8 might make the most sense in this context since pizzas typically have 8 slices. We can go from 1/2 to 2/4 to 4/8 each time by multiplying both the numerator and denominator of the fraction each by 2. Terms used in this video are: Equivalent fractions: Fractions that have the same part to whole ratio once simplified; fractions that can be obtained from one another through multiplication of the numerator and denominator by the same value.
