It has been found that athletes (soccer players) with short fascicle length have a 4-fold increase in hamstring injury risk than players who have longer fascicles. It’s important to be able to strengthen whilst lengthening—studies found that eccentric contraction brought about the best prevention. Exercises that work are Nordic curls, Deadlifts and Leg curls. Ultimately, any exercise that you progressively overload, and that allows you to eccentrically load the hamstrings will provide protective effects. Timmins et al, (2016) Short biceps femoris fascicles and eccentric knee flexor weakness increase the risk of hamstring injury in elite football (soccer).
