Compactors are available in manual or automatic models. Specimen diameter is determined by the maximum aggregate size. 4in (101.6mm) diameter specimens are suitable for mixes containing aggregates up to 1in (25.4mm), and 6in (152.4mm) diameter specimens are used for aggregate sizes up to 1-1/2in (38.1mm). Gilson’s MS-50 Manual Marshall Compactor implements a hand-operated drop hammer on a guide rod to compact asphalt samples and is suitable for periodic use. The Manual Compactor utilizes a stationary mold and a flat-faced hammer to compact the asphalt specimen evenly. Mechanical Marshall Compactor models are available with stationary or rotating bases to compact 4in or 6in diameter asphalt specimens at 64 blows per minute (BPM). MS-53 has a stationary base and compacts 4in diameter specimens at 55BPM. Automatic Marshall Compactors have rotating bases and are configured to compact two or three 4in diameter specimens simultaneously for increased throughput in high-volume testing labs. Mechanical and automatic models use electric motors to automatically raise the drop hammer between successive blows and feature a hammer-blow counter that turns the unit off when compaction is complete. This ensures uniform sample preparation and allows the mold to be inverted and compacted on the opposite side with the same number of blows. Additional mold and hammer assemblies are available for increased efficiency.
