In every safety management audit I have conducted, I have walked into a room and met one of three companies. The genuine. The performing. The ones who never understood the system was meant to mean anything. The question I ask them is the same in every audit, and it is not on the checklist. This episode is about that question. It is also the first in a long inquiry the channel will be conducting — into Robert Pirsig's argument about Quality, into Carlos Castaneda's teachings about perception, into the recognition that has appeared, under different names, in every serious tradition humans have built for themselves. The episode opens in the audit room. It moves through hospitals where every protocol is followed and the patient still leaves unseen, through schools where every standard is met and curiosity has died, through marriages where every responsibility is discharged and no one is loved. It then walks through Pirsig's classroom, the breakdown that made the book, and the operational instruction at the centre of his work. The argument it reaches is one Pirsig spent his life refusing to formulate, because formulating it kills it: that the moment Quality is defined, it becomes truth, and truth, the moment it is fixed, must be defended. The defending produces enemies. The enemies produce conflict. And the conflict produces the strange persistent feeling, in many of the people inside our civilisation, that something they cannot name has gone missing. The next episode will be about Carlos Castaneda, who picked up the inquiry exactly where Pirsig set it down — treating the inner silence Pirsig spent his life arriving at not as a destination but as a doorway. This is Episode 4 of Dead Reckoning and Gestalt: Small Satoris, and the first of the Stopping the Internal Dialogue series within it. Books and references Robert Pirsig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values (1974) Robert Pirsig, Lila: An Inquiry into Morals (1991) Carlos Castaneda, The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge (1968) About this channel Dead Reckoning and Gestalt: Small Satoris is a channel for people who are not satisfied with surface explanations — who want to navigate to the core of complex ideas and see the whole picture. The method is Dead Reckoning: navigating from first principles, without external authority. The goal is the Small Satori: the quiet moment when fog lifts and something becomes permanently clearer. For those who enjoy the effort of understanding. The fog lifted a little. That is enough. #philosophy #pirsig #castaneda #Stopping the Internal Dialogue
