We go through Google Quantum AI's recent Nature paper, "Suppressing quantum errors by scaling a surface code logical qubit" https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05434-1 The Google team experimentally realizes a 5x5 and 3x3 surface code, one of the most powerful quantum error correcting codes. We first explain the basics of quantum error correction using the bit flip code as an example and introduce the key ideas of syndrome measurements and stabilizers. Then we describe the basic experiment on the sycamore chip that Google did, and walk through the experimental results.
