The flywheel is temporarily removed from my gravity return dynamic rowing ergometer - I'm using it to test an idea in another project. The mechanics are more visible without the flywheel obstructing the view. The take up force is indistinguishable in feel from a new elastic cord in a conventional machine - with the advantage that gravity will never wear out or go out of adjustment. Additionally, it is a simpler, more elegant solution to the problem of chain take-up and handle return.
