Open mics save lives. I started volunteering with Maine Inside Out about 7 years ago leading creative writing workshops at the youth prison in southern maine. going to this open mic led by previously incarcerated young people was so beautiful. also in the building was Jeremy, founder of the Recovery Connections of Maine just down the street. I got to lead creative writing workshops for hundreds of ppl in recovery in 2020, and it was huge contribution to my mental wellness. I started writing this song after seeing apes of the state in New Haven, CT at the state house . The show really inspired me. I’ve been in recovery for over 10 years now, and every year I lose more people I love. This song is an attempt at “reaching out before it’s too late” a tear covered love letter, a signal of forgiveness and understanding , a belief in the ability to change.
