It requires temperatures to remain above 50°F to grow effectively. Plant seeds or transplants only after all danger of frost has passed. Indoors, seeds should be started 4–6 weeks before the safe outdoor planting date. Seeds should be planted between 1/8 and 1/2 inch deep. Germination typically occurs within 5 to 7 days, though cool conditions will delay this process. Seeds should be sown 2–4 inches apart and thinned later. Transplants should be spaced 12–18 inches apart to ensure adequate air circulation. Full sun and well-drained soil are essential. While basil can grow indoors, it requires exceptionally bright light. Irrigation: Plants should be watered adequately to keep leaves tender, but overwatering must be avoided to prevent root rot. Watering at the base of the plant in the morning helps keep foliage dry. Up to one-third of the plant can be harvested at once for recipes like pesto. The plant should be allowed to regrow for several weeks before another large harvest. Basil does not refrigerate well, as it is highly sensitive to cold and will quickly discolor. Fresh sprigs can be kept for several days on a counter in a vase of water, similar to cut flowers. Terminal shoots should be pinched off regularly. This encourages branching, stimulates tender new growth, and slows flower production, which can alter leaf flavor.
