Gun Dog Conditioning
Brookside Gun Dogs, LLC at The High Lonesome Ranch http://www.brooksidegundogsllc.com/ http://www.thehighlonesomeranch.com/shooting/wing-shooting/ Hi. I'm Steve Nicholas with Brookside Gun Dogs at the High Lonesome Ranch. We are going to do a series of training tips, one a week for the next eight weeks. This first week, we're going to talk about conditioning. Every year you hear of a dog going down in the field due to exhaustion and overheating. Just like all athletes, gun dogs need to be both trained and conditioned, and now is the perfect time to get your dog ready for opening day. We understand that everyone has a busy schedule, but with just 30 minutes or so a day in the morning or evening when the temperatures are a little cooler, there are several simple things that you can do to get your hunting buddy back into shape after the off season. Throwing bumpers is a great way to exercise him, and he'll love you for it. At Brookside we also use swimming to keep our dogs in top hunting condition, and long walks, allowing them to get out and quarter. This is also a great time to tune them up on those whistle commands that you will be using in the field this fall. And just remember, while conditioning is a great way to get your dog ready for the hunting season, no amount of conditioning can get them ready for hunting a full day in the early, warm days of September and October. So just remember, always give them plenty of rest and always have plenty of water on hand. Thanks for watching our video.
