If you are enjoying GWUP and feel so inclined....https://kevinneidig.com/tip-jars/31714 Anyone that send a tip will get a secret link to the play along soundslice practice page for this GWUP. Key Exercises Covered 1. Seventh Position Chord & Melody Walk-Up (B Minor Center) Starting Point: 7th position (starting at the 7th fret). Chords Used: B Minor: A "spread voicing" where the root is the low B, and the higher D note (normally in the chord) is played an octave higher on a higher string. A Major: Played by moving two fingers up to the 8th fret; the bass remains on the 7th fret. Technique Focus: "Spider" Walking: The instructor demonstrates walking up and down the strings one finger at a time without lifting more than necessary, allowing notes to sustain and harmonize. The D Chord: A specific shape is practiced where the pinky must stretch/move significantly to reach the target note. Barre Application: A barre across the bottom four strings at the 7th fret is used for resolution chords. Progression: Students are instructed to practice this pattern shifting down one fret at a time until reaching the first finger position. 2. First Inversion Walk-Down (Key of A) Concept: Playing through first-inversion shapes in the key of A, ensuring the bass note sustains throughout the progression. Shapes Used: Spread voicings similar to the previous exercise but shifted up a string. Starts with an A in first inversion. Resolves/shifts to a D in first inversion (third is in the bass). Fingering Pattern: Uses a specific sequence of fingers (3rd, index, pinky) to navigate between chords. Goal: To maintain continuous sound on the bass string while changing higher notes, effectively creating a walking bassline/melody hybrid. Technical Takeaways & Tips Minimal Movement: Crucial for this style is to move only the finger required for the next note. Do not lift fingers unnecessarily. Sustain Harmony: The exercise is designed so that multiple notes ring out simultaneously, creating a rich harmonic texture rather than just single-note lines. Physical Warning: The instructor notes that shifting all the way to the first fret can be physically demanding ("tough on your hand"). If it hurts too much, students are allowed to skip those specific shifts.
