I've wanted to make a pole lathe for a while but I did not just want to go to Lowes and buy dimensional lumber. A few months back a very large limb broke out of a Hackberry tree in the next subdivision over. I offered to clear their yard for free and hence came by some very large pieces. My original intention was bowls but the grain is every which way so I hewed it into beams and planks in preparation for the pole lathe. I wanted to keep it reasonably rustic but I have not gone to the lengths of smithying my own hardware. Started with a traditional spring pole but found that the pole I had was not springy enough hence the temporary bungee solution. Basically it works but I'm sure that it will always be a work in progress. Very satisfying to see and hear the shavings fly off.
