HackTip: How to use a diode as a temperature sensor

In this video I show how to use regular diode like the 1N4148 to measure temperature. Why would you use a diode instead of a real temperature sensor? Cost and availability. Temperature sensors don't cost much, but diodes are even cheaper and will be just as good in some applications. I've used 1N4148s to measure temperature when I ran out of temperature sensors and didn't have time to wait for new ones. This isn't a new invention, but still worth sharing in my opinion.
