Halloween Night
The iron gates are creaking in the midnight breeze The autumn leaves are shivering among the dying trees A silver frost is biting through the thin and chilly air You feel a phantom presence but there's no one really there The jack-o'-lanterns flicker with a wicked orange glow While shadows in the alleyways begin to stretch and grow We're walking down the gravel path with bags held in our hands Obeying every custom that this haunted night demands Trick or treat until the moon turns black Once you cross the threshold there is no way back Skeletons are dancing to a rhythmic clicking sound While the spirits of the ages rise up from the ground It’s a creepy kind of magic in the October light Everything is breathing on a Halloween night A black cat on a picket fence begins a jagged scream It’s hard to tell the difference between a nightmare and a dream The wind is howling secrets that the living shouldn't know As pale and misty figures start to wander to and fro High above the rooftops where the clouds are thin and grey A witch across the crescent moon is making her own way Her broomstick carves a jagged line against the velvet sky While the children in their costumes watch the wicked lady fly Trick or treat until the moon turns black Once you cross the threshold there is no way back Skeletons are dancing to a rhythmic clicking sound While the spirits of the ages rise up from the ground It’s a creepy kind of magic in the October light Everything is breathing on a Halloween night The doorbell rings a heavy chime that echoes through the hall You can hear the spiders crawling deep inside the hollow wall Old candy corn and chocolate for the ghouls upon the porch While the flickering of candles acts as every spirit's torch Don't look behind your shoulder as you wander through the park For the things with glowing eyes are watching closely in the dark The midnight hour is calling and the graveyard starts to hum Beware the rhythmic beating of the ancient spirit drum Dancing bones and screaming cats beneath the yellow moon Halloween is ending but it ended far too soon Trick or treat until the light Fades into the hollow night
