Hamburg, Germany
In June and July 2025, we visited Flensburg, Germany for one month. Armed with our Deutschland ticket, we spent lots of time exploring nearby cities and towns. On one such occasion we rode the RE7 to Hamburg. Our first visit to Hamburg during our stay in Flensburg coincided with the first day of Summer and people were out an about enjoying the weather. On this occasion, the U bahn was closed, so we rode city busses. Hamburg was a lot of fun. In 1962, my father lived in Hamburg at a guesthouse at 26 Hofweg. We made our way to 26 Hofweg and found a picturesque neighborhood. While visiting St. Michael’s Church, we came across an Armenian wedding and sat in the back pews for a few minutes listening to the priest in Armenian. Our Deutschland ticket permitted us to ride the public transit ferries in the city, so we took a short ride on the #72 from Elbphilharmonie to Landungsbrücken Brücke. Later we checked out Reeperbahn, where all the bars and nightclubs are and the street was in full day drinking and summer fun mode. On our second visit to Hamburg during our stay in Flensburg, coincided with the Schlagermove Hamburg, the largest Festival of Love in Germany. The city was full of hippie clad, flower power revelers celebrating. On this occasion, the U bahn was open, and riding the elevated train cars was a treat, although quite a tight fit with the influx of festival attendees. We spent our time visiting some lesser known sites such as the shipwreck of the MS Uwe, walking the Alter Elbtunnel, and exploring the Gängeviertel neighborhood. We hope you enjoy this this video of our explorations of Hamburg.
