Hand Based Splint for IPJ Flexion

In this video, Occupational Therapist Filion Zhu from our Bulleen and Ivanhoe clinics demonstrates the fabrication of a hand-based splint designed to improve IP joint flexion. First, Filion creates the hand base using Orfit ECO thermoplastic, carefully moulded for comfort and stability. She then positions and attaches the outrigger at the base of the targeted finger to allow controlled dynamic movement. Next, the finger ring is fabricated, incorporating an inline gripping material to improve adherence and reduce slippage on the skin. Holes are then added to the finger ring to allow the fishing line to be threaded through. A paper clip is used as an attachment hook to connect the dynamic components. Finally, the fishing line and elastic are threaded through the outrigger and secured to the finger ring - completing the splint. This custom hand-based splint provides gentle, controlled assistance to improve IP joint flexion, while respecting tissue healing and individual anatomy.
