In this video, we look at harmonic analysis which provides motivation for the study of Lie groups. We revisit the notion of Fourier series and see how the ubiquity of this notion is related to the symmetry encoded in the circle Lie group. We then briefly touch on the subject of spherical harmonics, where the Lie group SO(3) is used to study functions on the two-dimensional sphere.
