Harmonic Shell Model || Soloing Mini Series No1
Hey guys! As promised, let's break away from polyphonic shenanigans for now and look at some concepts and exercises to help your soloing. First on the menu: the Harmonic Shell Model. I've devised it as a way to organise the notes of the chromatic scale from most to least consonant, in relation to any given chord, to help you make the most musical note choices possible. It's not going to turn you into Larry Carlton over night, but it's a great first step to taking control of your solo playing. No specific song today, just a little intro jam over a simple I - IV vamp. This methodology applies to pretty much every solo I've ever taken, for Cosmic Latte and my session work. Might just be my emotional predisposition, but I always find making sense of life-affirming major chords so much harder than embracing the beautiful melancholy of their minor counterparts.
