Harvard Applied Math 205 is a graduate-level course on scientific computing and numerical methods. This video continues Unit 5 of the course on eigenvalue problems. It introduces some of the definitions and concepts in this unit, such as the characteristic polynomial, companion matrix, and algebraic/geometric multiplicity. A computer example shows how Python's "eig" function handles defective matrices where an eigenvalue has lower geometric multiplicity and algebraic multiplicity.
