🤗 Join The English Language Club: https://www.skool.com/engliah-language-club-8321/about Have and Have got basically mean the same thing. So what is the difference and when should we use each one? One difference is that ‘I have got a car.' can be contracted to *‘I’ve got a car', but we do not contract 'have' when it is used as the main verb. For example, "I have a car." can’t be contracted to *"I've a car“. When it comes to using the past tense, it is less common to use 'have got'. While it is not wrong to say "I hadn't got a car", it is more common to say "I didn't have a car". So, in general, we tend to use 'have' instead of 'have got' in the past tense. Let's look at some examples to clarify the use of 'have' and 'have got': "I have a headache" and "I have got a headache" mean the same thing. "He has a lot of money" can’t be contracted but "He has got a lot of money“ can be contracted to "He's got a lot of money“. "I didn't have time to study yesterday" is more commonly used than "I hadn't got time to study yesterday". In conclusion, both 'have' and 'have got' can be used to refer to possession, but 'have got' is more informal and commonly used in spoken English. We can contract 'have got' to 'have', but we do not contract 'have' when it is used as the main verb. While it is not wrong to use 'have got' in the past tense, it is less common.
