Hawkwind were an English rock band known as one of the earliest 'space' rock groups or UK 'psychedelic' heavy metal band.
Since their formation in November 1969, Hawkwind went through many incarnations and were to incorporate many different styles into their music, including hard rock, progressive rock and psychedelic rock.
They are also regarded as an influential proto-punk band.
Hawkwind are quite probably best known for this track "Silver Machine", which became a number-three UK hit single in 1972.
Hawkwind guitarist Dave Brock wrote the music to this track, and their frontman Bob Calvert composed the lyric.
