In this video I show you how to tie the heaving line knot. This knot also goes by the name "Franciscan monk's knot".
The use for the knot is for passing rope, similarly to a monkey's fist knot. You tie the knot onto an end of rope to bulk it up, making it easier to throw. This is used to pass rope from a ship onto land but has many other uses as well. Hanging a swing from a tree, making a makeshift handle etc.
The heaving line knot is not just one knot, but more of a family of knots used for the same purpose. There are a bunch of variations of the knot.
