Hebrews Study 12-Chapter 6:1-8 Key Verse Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher (perfector) of our faith; who, for the joy that was set down before him endured the cross, despising the shame, sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Personal commitment: Read a chapter from Leviticus, Hebrews, Psalm 95 and Psalm 110 weekly Context is from 5:11 through 6:12 What is the theme of the Hebrew letter (Comparing Christianity to Judaism) What is the theme of the context (Ch5:11 - Ch6:12- Christianity is far more superior to Judaism What is the theme of the passage itself- Those clinging to Judaism are babes in faith. Hebrews 6:1-8 Review of Soteriology-The Theological doctrine of Salvation-You MUST be sound in understanding the true and only Gospel! Scriptures: John 3:3-Ezekiel 36:25-27 John 10:27-29 Acts 16:31 Romans 3:24-28, 4:4,5:1, 8:35, 38,39, & 11:6 Galatians 2:16, 3:6, 3:10 Ephesians 2:8-10 Phillipians 1:6 Titus 3:5 1 Peter 1:4,5 Hebrews 7:25 Verse 1 press on GK has the undergirding of endurance so, we must persevere to maturity (Progressive Sanctification) Verses 1-3 Quick review of Elementary teachings Verse 4-6 Impossible to restore to repentance Verse 4- overview of GK word meanings impossible means absolutely incapable Enlightened means to shine rays or brighten, to illuminate and to make one see Tasted means to eat or figuratively experience Gift means a gratuitous gift Who shared means became participants Verse 5 Tasted means (here figuratively) to experience Goodness means the value of something Powers is dynameis and means here the dynamic and miraculous force The coming age refers the Messianic age that’s coming Example: Judas Iscariot Verse 6 And then relates to the previous verses where they have experienced the fullness of God's attributes, His power and the gratuitous goodness and then… Fall away which means to fall aside, fall away after being close beside. To deviate from the right path Restored means To bring back and make qualitatively new (Note: if someone backslide out of their Salvation it states here that it is “Impossible” to renew them again!!!) Repentance means the changing of one’s mind and turning “back again” Crucifying here means to re-crucify or to impale again! This would mean that Christ's atoning work was not sufficient the first time!!! Subjecting to open and public disgrace… A parable Verses 7-8 Verse 7 The imagery in this verse is an encouragement to those true believers in this church that they are producing good fruit (works of righteousness) and will receive adulation and praise from God Verse 8 This verse is written to those who are merely professors but not possessors of Christ (Matthew 13:18-23) Worthless means failing to pass the test, counterfeit, unapproved and worthless (See Romans 1:28 Depraved, 2 Corinthians 13:5 failed the test, 2 Timothy 3:8 rejected) Curse means a doomed one The end will be burned is a symbolism of the future of one who is not truly born again Close with Chapter 7 verses 24-25 Let us live out our key verse daily!
