Students are required to read and to summarize texts in all content classes and in real world experiences. We'll be using the Paragraph Shrinking Strategy to create better summaries of text. The Paragraph Shrinking Strategy teaches students how to identify main idea and details in short reading passages and in multi-paragraph essays, and then summarize them in writing or orally.
With explicit structured instruction, students will be able to apply the strategy in classrooms and on the STAAR assessment.
The Paragraph Shrinking Strategy has three steps:
Step 1 - Name the Who or the What of the Paragraph
Step 2 - Tell the most important thing about the who or the what?
Step 3 - Say the main idea in 10 words or less.
