Hickman Fire burnover
On April 9th, 2011 the Hickman fire burned approximately 41 structures. We were assigned to "keep the fire out of the neighborhood". We positioned ourselves at the end of a paved road with a structure to our right. We thought we would be able to stop the fire with 1 3/4 preconnects. This tactic and positioning off of the paved road resulted in a burn over. Both nozzlemen had on full structure gear with SCBA on air. Both guys backing up the nozzlemen were in full structure gear with only N95 masks. The second hose team goes to full fog pattern and was able to hunker down while the flame front passed them. We were fortunate to only loose one set of eye brows on this incident. This video is a good example of the "its just a grass fire" mentality and a lack of training. I post it in hopes that others will learn from our mistakes. Proper establishment and use of safety zones with fire front following or any of the structure protection tactics(WUI) would have kept us from being burned over, as well allowed us to be more efficient and effective. I highly recommend the annual Bastrop Fire academy as well as TEEX fire training, both of which can be available for free through grants through TFS and TEEX for any volunteer or career Fire Depts. No structure is worth anyone's life!!! LCES Video is captured with a Fire Helmet Cam.
