The idea of any hip hinge is to shift your weight back so the hips move behind the heels and the weight shifts more to the heels in the feet
In order to keep the weight back when moving from a bilateral to unilateral hinge, first stagger the feet so the weight can shifted to one leg while still maintaining balance.
Once this staggered hinge can be executed, then slide the non-weight bearing foot back into a single leg hinge, while being sure to maintain the posterior weight shift on the standing leg.
