Borehole cleaning depends on several essential factors categorized into fluid properties, drilling mechanics, and borehole geometry. Maintaining these factors ensures efficient cuttings removal, prevents "stuck pipe" incidents, and protects equipment like submersible pumps. 1. Mechanical & Operational Factors • Annular Velocity (Flow Rate): This is the speed of the fluid in the space between the drill pipe and the borehole wall. Higher velocity is the primary driver for pushing cuttings upward. • Drill Pipe Rotation (RPM): In deviated or horizontal wells, rotating the pipe at higher speeds (ideally above 120 RPM) agitates settled cuttings, moving them back into the high-velocity fluid stream. • Rate of Penetration (ROP): Faster drilling generates more cuttings. If ROP is too high for the current flow rate, cuttings will accumulate and potentially "pack-off" the hole. 2. Drilling Fluid (Mud) Properties • Rheology: Factors like Plastic Viscosity (PV) and Yield Point (YP) determine the fluid's ability to suspend and carry cuttings. A higher YP generally improves solid suspension. • Density (Mud Weight): Higher density increases buoyancy on cuttings, helping them lift to the surface. • Gel Strength: Critical for keeping cuttings in suspension when circulation is temporarily stopped. 3. Borehole Geometry • Inclination Angle: Cleaning is most difficult in wells angled between 35° and 65°, where cuttings tend to slide back down or form "beds" on the low side of the hole. • Eccentricity: When the drill pipe is not centered (often resting on the low side in angled wells), it creates "dead zones" with low fluid velocity where cuttings easily settle. 4. Cuttings Characteristics • Size and Shape: Smaller or rounded cuttings are often harder to transport because they tumble more easily. • Density: Heavier rock fragments require higher annular velocities to prevent them from slipping back down. In this video we will take about the first part including the mechanical and operational factors, we will continue the rest in the next one.
