The terminating resistors for the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus in a 2018 Honda Pilot All-Wheel Drive are typically integrated into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the ABS/VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) module. Terminating Resistor Locations The physical resistors are located internally within specific electronic control units (ECUs) at the extreme ends of the network's wiring harness to prevent signal reflections. Powertrain Control Module (PCM): One 120-ohm terminating resistor is located inside the PCM. ABS/VSA Module: The second 120-ohm terminating resistor is found within the ABS/VSA control module. The network itself typically starts at the Data Link Connector (DLC), using pins 6 (CAN High) and 14 (CAN Low), and the bus lines pass through various modules before terminating in the PCM and ABS/VSA module. Testing the Termination You can verify the presence and function of the termination resistors using a digital multimeter (DMM) with the vehicle's power off and the battery disconnected. Access the DLC: Connect your multimeter to pins 6 (CAN High) and 14 (CAN Low) of the OBD2 diagnostic port. Measure Resistance: The meter should read approximately 60 ohms. Interpretation: A reading of ~60 ohms indicates that both 120-ohm resistors are present and the network circuit is intact (they are wired in parallel). A reading of approximately 120 ohms would indicate that only one terminating resistor is active or connected to the circuit. A reading close to zero ohms suggests a short circuit between the CAN High and CAN Low lines.
