Honour The Line
There was a time when Australia was barely a nation at all. Federation had only come in 1901. We were young, uncertain, still finding our place in the world—more a collection of distant colonies than a country with its own identity. Then came 1914. When war broke out, thousands of young Australians volunteered. Not because they had to—but because they felt they should. Many had never left their towns, let alone crossed oceans. Yet they went. Together with New Zealanders, they formed the ANZACs—and in 1915, they landed on the shores of Gallipoli. What followed was not victory. It was something far more enduring. They faced impossible terrain, relentless enemy fire, bitter cold, disease, and exhaustion. They dug into cliffs and lived in trenches carved from rock and dust. Day after day, they endured conditions that would break most men. But they didn’t break. They looked after each other. They shared water when there wasn’t enough. Carried the wounded under fire. Stood by their mates when everything else was falling apart. That spirit—mate ship, courage, sacrifice, and endurance—became the foundation of something bigger than the campaign itself. Because Gallipoli didn’t just test them. It revealed who they were. For Australia, it was the first time the world saw us—not as an outpost of empire, but as a people. Tough. Loyal. Resourceful. Unwilling to give in. The cost was heavy. Thousands never came home. But from that loss, a national identity was forged. ANZAC Day isn’t about celebrating war. It’s about remembering what those men showed us: That ordinary people, in extraordinary circumstances, can rise above fear… and stand together. And in doing so, they gave a young nation something it had never truly had before— a sense of who we are. Lest we forget. Lyrics - Dear media voices, dear people at home This day is not noise, nor a stage, nor a show It’s written in silence, in names carved in stone A story of courage most never were told ANZAC—remember, it’s written that way A bond forged in fire on that April day Australia and New Zealand, side by side At Gallipoli’s edge, where so many died [Verse 2] At dawn they came forward in lighters so slow No engines, just oars through the gunfire’s glow Not heroes in headlines, just boys sent to shore With fear in their chests… and a duty to war They didn’t retreat when the cost grew too high They withdrew with their brothers, with honour, with pride And sailors and airmen stood shoulder to stand Not all were just soldiers who served in that land [Verse 3] Rosemary grows where that red earth still bleeds A memory carried in small, simple leaves The poppies we wear tell the stories we keep Of peace, loss, and families who still softly weep Red for the fallen who sleep far away Purple for animals lost in the fray Orange for families left carrying pain White for the hope we won’t see war again [Verse 4] These aren’t just badges, nor trinkets, nor pins These medals were earned through the battles within They’re worn on the heart by the ones who stood fast And passed to the right by the echoes of past Don’t call it a celebration, don’t cheapen the day We honour their service in a solemn way A quiet reflection, a whisper, a thread That binds us to all of the words left unsaid [Verse 5] The Last Post is sounded… a bugle’s soft cry Not trumpets of glory, but a final goodbye The Ode is not spoken like words on a page It’s carried through time from a far distant age “They shall not grow old…”—we remember them still At the fall of the sun and the dawn’s early chill Not sport, not a game, not a moment to boast But lives given freely… at the ultimate cost Final Verse (Soft Rise → Fade) So stand in the silence, let meaning remain Not lost in the shouting, not drowned out in vain A drink with your mates, yes—but honour the line Between what is sacred… and crossing the time These stories are living, they breathe in us yet And words carry weight when we say we won’t forget Outro (Spoken / Whispered) Lest we forget… (Lone bugle begins – slow, distant Last Post feel…) (Wind rises gently… instruments fade one by one…) (Silence)
