Horse Eye Jacks

Video of Horse Eye Jacks in the Folkestone Marine Protected Area in Barbados on March 29, 2023. Swimming just beyond or just before (whichever is easier or safer) the Reef Crest, where the waves break, is a great place to see fish, especially late in the day. They seem attracted to the debris, invertebrates etc stirred up by the breaking waves; there are schools of smaller fish and larger fish come in after them. This video shows a school of "Horse-eye Jacks" on "Reef 33". They can grow to a meter in size and are definitely good eating - I used to get them when I was spearfishing 'in the old days' (1960s). Every now and then a really big predator fish (e.g., tarpon, bonefish or barracuda) will come in after the smaller fish; they are hard to catch on video as they are so fast. Some large fish -possibly barracuda- can be seen in the distance at several points in the original video, but not in this uploaded version - however they can be seen in the 4th still at the beginning (circa 17 sec in).
