How do TBN additives / overbased detergents work?

TBN additives, otherwise known as overbased detergents, are one of the most common lubricants additives, particularly in engine oils. They area multifunctional additive that affords keep clean detergent, acid neutralisation and ash creation. Both the manufacture and action of these additives are grounded in acid-base reactions.
